German Features:

Germans usually have a slight pigment to their skin. I'm 25% German. They also have distinct skin, sometimes slightly freckled (usually minimal or none at all.) I have also noticed that they have a broad type nose. Many also have very broad shoulders or a stocky build (usually both the women and the men) and sometimes a fuller chest.

Here are some examples of german's with pigment:

Heidi Klum

Faces:
Some also have fuller faces around the cheek and bottom half of the face area.
Example (from google search)

Broad Shoulders:

Pouty lips/Kinda of a skin matching eyebrow look

Claudia Schiffer

Kim Bassinger

Eyebrows/Eye shape:

They are tall, mostly dark blonde and almost blue or green eyed (80-85%). Very typical Germans are Oliver Kahn, Claudia Schiffer, German Football (Soccer) players, etc...

I disagree with basshunter. I've been to Germany several times and most of them have brown hair and not all of them have blue or green eyes either. Just take a look at the famous Kaulitz brothers -- they almost look Asiatic, with dark skin, medium brown hair, and dark eyes.

No, I am not American, I am Canadian of German descent, so I've been to Germany various times. One of my own relatives (grandmother's sister) had dark hair and those odd "asiatic" eyes, and there is no Turkish blood in my family, nor anything else so please don't even begin to assume. There are plenty of brown-haired people in Germany. The Kaulitz brothers btw, are 100% German. They are not Turkish.

We had several German exchange students at my high school every year and they were all brunette/sandy brown, though with different colored eyes. I remember discussing racial stereotypes with them, and they informed me that naturally blond hair in Germany is not as common as brownish hair. They said a high percentage of "blondes" in Germany come from a bottle, much like in the US.

Anonymous said...

I have a similar story as with kjc. They, the german exchange students, tell us that our school actually has more blonde students (in this town in america we are mostly scandinavian, fair european, etc) than they do.. lol
Only one of six students has blonde hair (and it looks like hers is bleached from a sandy blonde/light brown ;p)4

Yeah, I can see a lot of this in me. Especially the nose and hair and eyes. Then again I think I am like 40% German.. Thank other ethnic backgrounds :/

I am female, with a twin brother; 100% Teutonic heritage (traceable as far back as post-Dark Age Wessex), and we both have dark brown, almost black hair, dark brown eyes, fair skin, and freckles...and moles, lots of them, all over. The first thing people need to remember is that just because one was born and raised in Germany, doesn't mean they are Germanic, genetically. It's hard to find people these days who don't have some sort of genetic blending going on, unless they live on a remote island. There are "features" characteristic of every heritage, but they are more of a guideline and less of a rule.

@Sound of the Occident The Kaulitz brothers are not famous? You must live in a cave. No wait...you have internet access. Are we talking about the same Kaulitz brothers?

@Wendy In any case...they may not be 100% German, we don't know anything about their genetic lineage, so it's impossible to say. They exhibit features that are not "typically" Germanic, and in fact...their mother presents with some very definable Celtic and French characteristics. Being Northern German, where the Nordic countries have a higher influence, dictates a higher rate of light haired, light eyed Germans, and Bill and Tom don't fit the mold. It could mean anything. It could mean nothing.

My point is that in an age where travel is fast and easy and immigration takes place with more frequency...it is silly to say, "All Germans should have this feature", or "All Italians should be defined by that feature."

I am like greater than 50% german. Just like amercians I believe they all look different. The hair and eye color varies with genetics. But I do happen to know the original German culture has fair skin with light freckles, a variety of noses, shorter build for the most part, a fuller chest sometimes, and high cheek bones. Oh and those slightly tired looking eyes. I am most of these things with brown hair and eyes. But I look German.

A lot of German wisconsin folks:

large blue eyes
rich summer tan
light brown/dark blonde hair
large cheek bones
small lips
face having sharp angles
small simple noses
small yet quite prominent eyebrows
small short faces

Mandrake_Bazarov said...

Having a German partner and having spent some time there I can say there is quite a variety in the features of 100% native German's though less variety than you see in England. I find Germans often, though not always have:

Broad faces
Wide spaced eyes
Prominent brow ridge which in turn makes small eyebrows seem more prominent
Strong cheek bones
Slightly tanned/olive skin
Sandy blonde/light brown hair
Thin upper lips
Square shoulders
Small noses
...at least that is how they look to someone who spends most of their time looking at English faces.

I was just about to ask about that propensity to tan! All my German relatives and friends save 1 tend to have tanner skin.

My parents are German immigrants. I am completely of German descent. I tan very easily and my skin is usually a sort pale olive tone. I have small lips and small eyebrows actually - I've heard that Germans have prominent eyebrow bones but I don't actually. The small nose thing does not apply to me at all, unfortunately i have an odd rather round nose, hazel-green eyes, and high cheekbones.

Gregg, I agree that's the majority of Wisconsinites that are from German decent but not always, I am mostly from German decent and I don't have sharp angles a small nose or barely noticeable eyebrows. But maybe that's the polish speaking...

@basshunter not all Germans are tall. In fact the average height for german males is 5'10" and the average height for german females is 5'4"

I'm an American of German descent, I still have family in Germany and Austria, but why do you use American in such a derogatory way? It upsets me. Have you legitimately had bad experiences with Americans, or do you just have bad feelings towards us because of our government and/or jokes and stereotypes?

Unknown said...

Before you ask yes Crouse is the English spelling. My family anglicised it from Kraus. Not being testy there, people just get confused every time so I thought I'd get that out of the way.

Because the internet hates us, best to just accept it the person was desperate for easy upvotes "yeah, I'm silly enough not to realize it's America's government that I hate, not the actual citizens" nice try German person. Your post was informative, yet cunty.

I am about 45% German. I did a DNA test and it comes up roughly to that amount. My grandmother is full blood German. She came from two very different backgrounds. Her father was from Oldenburg, which is Northern Germany. He was tall, tan, blue eyed and nearly black hair. Her mother was what they call a Black Sea German. She was short, broad nose and shoulders, wide smile and lips, high cheekbones, pretty but not stunning and fair skinned. Her family had a lot of mixed blood, mixing with Hungarians, Austrians and French. A lot of people say I take after her, except I got blue eyes and my Grandma's dark hair. I have a broad nose, wide smile and lips and similar eyes.

I have recently had a DNA test and it showed 54% Western European. I have a lot of German on both sides but one side states " Black Dutch" and they are darker and tall, with most women over 5'8, some even 6' tall. The men are over 6'. I am 5'7" and have dark blonde hair, a broader nose, and pale greenish-blue eyes. Just FYI to simply add to the others who have responded here. I also show 19% British, 14% Irish and 10% Iberian (+trace).

Unknown said...

I'm German, me and my whole family, going generations back, are 5'8" or close to it. Distinct noses, blue eyes, big boned (we look like we weigh less than what we really do.) We have an even mix of family with dark blonde or dark brown hair. My family has very curly hair. The men in my family have big feet, broad shouldered and square built. The women have small chest, large arms, and child bearing hips and round behind lol! In the winter we get very white but in the summer we get a tan that makes people jealous and we are very creative and can figure out almost anything.

Unknown said...

Oh yeah, small lips, high check bones, my face stayed very round till I was 21 years old and I pluck my eye brows because the are light colored, thin consistency but alot of coverage on the brow bone lol!

Since the late 1960s/ early 1970s, Germany has had an increasingly massive immigrant population, with most of those immigrants coming from countries where almost everyone has dark hair & eyes,it has impacted enormously on how "the average" German looks. Nowadays most Germans probably have dark hair and possibly also brown eyes. This is in stark contrast to what it was like in the 1970s, which is when I went to school there in North Germany. In my class if 33 students, only one child had brown eyes. Almost everyone has blue or green eyes. The darkest hair colour was dark brown, no one had black hair. Lots of different shades of blonde and light brown hair, occasionally red. Skintones generally fair. Extremely white skin that doesn't tan was common.
Most were tall, long legs & arms. Athletic build bodies. Nowhere near as stocky as some Americans are. Big breasted women and full lips were also quite common in my neck if the woods. However, the more south you went, the number of people with brown eyes & hair would increase, and the locals would have a stockier build.
Back then in the 70s,

I'm American but mostly German with some English mixed in. By reading these comments, I see that I do have many of the characteristics associated with German genetics. High cheek bones, round face, green eyes, light brown hair, broad shoulders, muscular, large forehead.

As so many of these posts differ in defining the physical characteristics of the German people, I would suggest having your DNA tested. The results go back thousands of years of your ancestral migration patterns. DNA will more accurately define the countries from which your family originated. And, I would definitely say that none of these posts are 'dumb', which is obviously a naive - and ill-mannered - reply to some of the posters of this forum.

Emma Bradford said...

We've done DNA testing and Ancestry research. I'd say it depends on which part of Germany you came from. My Family is from Bavaria Germany. (I'm around 80% German, the rest is English) But my whole family is just carbon copies... Blonde hair at birth (besides me) turning dark brown with age (although one of my brothers turned dirty blonde)
Not every German has blonde hair...it's like saying every Irish person HAS to have Red hair, or they're "not irish" we also all have brown eyes.
My facial structure is an average nose, (kinda short, but it sticks out) HIGH cheekbones, small jaw, (very rectangular) a small curve on my chin, and a larger forehead, and I've got raven curly hair, pale olive skin, and Black eyes that turn auburn in the sunlight.
Point is, not ALL Germans are Blonde with Blue eyes...
I look EXACTLY like my Grandmother who is even more German than I, who looked Exactly like hers before her...leading back to German, after German...
Bottom line: I'm sure if you go to different parts of Germany there will be more Blonde Haired, blue eyed people, and if you go others there will be dark hair and dark eyes.
Quit being rude...

Okay I hate going here, but I think you could thank Hitler and the Nazis (sounds like a rock band) for the stereotype that Germans typically are pale, blonde hair, blue eyes. You could even look at pictures of prominent Nazis. They had their backgrounds checked to 1800 I believe. Many of them had brown hair and brown eyes. While I don't believe things like dark brown or black hair and dark brown eyes are that common among ethnic Germans, it isn't like it is rare (Hitler, Goebbels,Stresier, Speer and Himmler..who looked Asian). Here's even a picture of some Nazis together. As you can clearly see, many have brown hair, brown eyes, and not as "pretty" features as they thought that they had. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/Karl_Freiherr_Michel_von_T%C3%BC%C3%9Fling.jpg

The blonde hair, light eyes, hair skin features are common in countries further north due to sunlight and temperature. Not particularly exciting I know....

I see lots of discussion of hair color, but I've been wondering about hair texture. I have Einstein hair that is a bit wavy and tends to fluff and frizz easily. My dad also has wavy hair and he is mostly of German descent. My mom, on the other hand, is mostly of UK descent and she has completely straight, limp hair. So I am wondering if fluffy hair is a common German trait and even more curious as to where the trait comes from originally.

I'm an American female of German descent, traced back to when they emigrated here. There is no mixing on my father's side and only very little mixing with Irish and Scandinavian on my mother's. Their names were Olrogge but they changed it to Oldro. I'm 5'8" and naturally very muscular. I have long arms and legs and broad shoulders. I have slightly narrow hips which make for a square build. Very light blue eyes. I had white-blonde hair when I was little but now it's darkened to a dirty blonde or light brown.

My Mother's family has a muscular, short stature (I'm 4'9"). We all have dark brown hair, brown eyes, tan easily and something called "Muntz hips" (the women anyway). A Stoskoph married a Muntz. one was from Alsace Lorraine and the other from the Suttgart area.

Ha ha! You are German, alright. You remind me of my mother and her side of the family - hot-tempered, loud and stubborn. I have a picture of my mother when she was young and quite beautiful - taffy blonde hair, fair skin but rosy cheeks, blue eyes, larger but nicely shaped nose, erect posture, broad shoulders.
I had dark hair, fair skin and blue green eyes - that was Dad's influence, being Scandinavian plus a little Irish and English. Oh - and I'm 5'8" tall.
